Putting a piece of that real life into the overall theme helps them stand out. Joyner agreed, saying that realistic zombie characters were once regular people - anything from fry cooks to bowlers. “It helps them create a more solid character,” he said. To put on a better show, that’s something Baker recommends for Montgomery’s zombies. “I write short stories behind them, so that they have a basis by which to act,” Baker said. He has an evil mime named Seven and and a crazy, gross clown named Sunshine. Those brave enough to step into Jackson’s shoes will, of course, need the red pants and ripped up red jacket. Hopefully they'll also have the dance moves to match it.īaker enjoys stepping into the shoes of characters he's created. “They were more stylistic than realistic,” Joyner said. ![]() Zombie themeįor “Thriller,” Joyner said the zombies were very dry and dusty, and had a gray to brownish flesh tone. The ensemble wore rotted suits and dresses, the kind of thing they’d have been buried in. "That puts a dirty finish on that doesn’t come off," he said. Harris said he uses a mix of black and brown spray paint on his zombie outfits. “You can pour coffee on one certain area, so that it’s not one solid stain,” he said. Let them dry so the stain sets, then wash, and repeat. But if you just put dirt on yourself, that's going to fall off.īaker suggests soaking clothes in coffee or tea. Just don’t go crazy with it, and don't put holes in the wrong places.Īlong with being torn, the clothing should look like it just came up out of the ground. If you’ve got a drill, a wire wheel brush will tear the fabric up a little, Baker said. “That way, it loosens up the edge and it doesn’t look like you’ve just cut it,” Baker said. “The body is rotting, and so the clothes would also be rotting and falling off.”īaker said to make small cuts or rips along the edges of the clothing, and them wash them three or four times. “There’s several ways that you can make them look old and tattered, because that’s kind of what you want with a zombie look,” Baker said. So how can you get undead looking fashion on a budget? You may already have the perfect outfit sitting in your closet - ripped pants, stained shirts, torn up shoes. “You need to make sure the costume reflects the makeup,” Joyner said. Their clothing is rotting, tearing and, to say the least, dirty. Zombies are, by their nature, filthy ragged things.
